STATUE OF LIBERTY

The Promise of Freedom

The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

The New Colossus – Emma Lazarus

“Freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness
unless it is lived in terms of Responsibleness.
That’s why I recommend that the Statue of Liberty
on the East Coast be supplemented by
a Statue of Responsibilityon the West Coast.”

Man’s Search for Meaning – Victor E. Frankl

Where Truth is Supreme Freedom Rings

“An honest use of “words” conveys reality–truth. We speak to identify something for
someone, this is communication. A lie, or a distorted use of words, are the opposite, they
withhold from the receivers a rightful share of the reality they are entitled to know, and
prevents his or her participation in the reality; this is an indifference, or a calculated
disregard for the truth. Plato challenges us to know that words can be carefully crafted–
perfectly worded, brilliantly formulated, strikingly written, performed and staged, yet in
their entire thrust and essence, be false, and not only false but outright bad, inferior,
contemptible, and wretched. Lies are destructive to the nature of communication, and
are devised to manipulate and control others. Abuse of language is an abuse of power.”

Abuse of Language: Abuse of Power – Josef Pieper

 Pro-choice Madness

Women endured and clawed to suffrage
Then clamored cries now set us free
Loose the chains by which you bind
Unleash the band that clamps the mind
We’ll hoist our banner and strike the pen
For divorcement from the bonds of men

Flags unfurled the charge began
Battle spears pierced the armored man
Some fought fair with firm inspiration
Others extorting with raging fulmination
No matter the family ring must sharply bend
To be equal now was the primal end

Alas atop the coveted crest
They scanned the bloodied field
Convention’s corpse revulsed them
We’ve reaped the right to wield
The burdens of our former lord
But lost his sword and shield

Charles N. Marrelli – 1981

A Mother

The Most Important Person
On earth is a mother. She
cannot claim the honor of
Having built Notre Dame
Cathedral. She need not. She
has built something more
cathedral—a dwelling for an
immortal soul, the tiny
perfection of her baby’s
Body…The angels have not
been blessed with such a
grace. They cannot share in
God’s creative miracle to bring
new saints to Heaven. Only a
human mother can. Mothers
are closer to God the Creator
than any other creature; God
joins forces with mothers in
performing this act of
creation…What on God’s
 good earth is more glorious
than this: to be a mother?

Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty
1892–1975
